PLEASE don’t read this

Seriously, don’t. You’ll feel let-down and disappointed.

Because that’s what web links do. They promise the earth. They demand our attention. They prey on our innermost desires and insecurities. They lead us into temptation and then; well, it’s always a bloomin’ let down, isn’t it?

Well, this one is even worse. Because it doesn’t even try to convince you that it’ll make you laugh, cry or squeal. It doesn’t promise to be the best link ever, or one of the thirty-seven things to do before you die.

So please don’t read on.

But you seem to have done just that. Which is really flattering, but a bit odd. I mean, we are surrounded by people who want us to keep reading. And you are reading something having been specifically asked not to.

Actually, that shouldn’t be a surprise. Because social media has changed the way we react.

Once upon a time, we were told what to do by big businesses. And we did it. We were told Guinness was good for us. So we drunk it. We were told to ‘Have a Camel’ cigarette. So we smoked one. We were told to use Persil. So we did.

And then we rebelled. We’d sit on a plane and ignore the safety talk because it would never happen to us. We were told to stop smoking, to stop eating sugar, to stop sunbathing, to stop using mobiles in the car, to drink less and … yes, the list is endless.

Health and Safety irritated us. And then the Internet tempted us with links and dreams, before breaking them with an avalanche of broken-links and broken-promises.

So we have become more cynical. We expect to be let down and bored. Especially when some annoying article implores us to read on, wasting valuable seconds.

Which is why I am asking you for the fourth and final time to stop now.

Because I’m asking you to do something you’ll hate. It’ll make you safer (I promise). It’ll increase the chances of your children seeing you return safely from work this evening. It’ll help in the (unlikely) event that you are unlucky enough to have an accident.

Yup, you’ve read this far, it’s too late to turn back. So you might as well click through to these little videos. They’re all actually quite cute at the start. And quite clever in the middle. And although you really don’t want to be told what to do, the fact is that we do smoke less these days, and are more likely to use sun cream, and seat belts because, eventually, it was drummed into our thick skulls that we might live longer.

And watching these might, just might, help you live a longer, healthier life.

So go on. Pick one. You know you want to!
